QAZPATENT HELD A ROUND TABLE ON THE TOPIC: LEGAL PROTECTION OF GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS AND THEIR ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF KAZAKHSTANI BRANDS

 

On February 17, 2023, a round table was held on the topic: “Legal protection of geographical indications and their role in the development of Kazakhstani brands” with the participation of representatives of regional local executive bodies and Chambers of Entrepreneurs, territorial bodies of justice, as well as entrepreneurs.

Deputy Director of Qazpatent Aisha Zhumabekova and Chairman of the Chamber of Patent Attorneys of Kazakhstan, Deputy Director of the Agency Intellectual Property “Tagbergenova and Partners”, Patent Attorney Modangul Tagbergenova addressed the participants of the event with a welcoming speech.

 

Within the framework of the event, topical issues of the protection of geographical indications at the national and international levels were discussed. Special attention was paid to the development of a promising direction that will contribute to the creation and promotion of unique brands of Kazakh products, as well as sustainable socio-economic development of rural regions of the country.

During the seminar, Ayagul Abitbekova, Acting Head of the Department of Trademarks, Geographical Indications, Appellations of Origin of Goods and Industrial Designs, made a presentation on “Legal protection of geographical indications and their role in the development of regional brands.”

Aizhan Nauryzgaliyeva, President of the Kazakhstan Association of Sugar, Food and Processing Industry, presented information about a unique product – apple “Aport”, as well as about the experience of raising awareness about the means of individualization of products through geographical indications. Following the results of the speech, the audience was presented with a film about topical issues in the production of Aport.

Marina Sirotina, Chief Expert of JSC “Center for Trade Policy Development “QazTrade” presented information on geographical indications in international trade agreements of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The issues of international practice of using protected geographical indications for products, the state of affairs in Kazakhstan, the possibilities of registering Kazakh products in the register of geographical indications of the European Union in relation to food products were explained.

The participants of the round table exchanged views on the issues that arose, and also agreed to continue cooperation in the area under consideration.
